SMSMan FAQ

Question:What is SMSC?
Answer:A SMSC (Short Message Service Centre) is a 'service' provided by the network carrier, which enables you to send short messages (SMS), logos or ringtones to a mobile phone using your PC and a analouge modem or ISDN-card. Doing this a special protocol is used (TAP / UCP).

Question: What's TAP?
Answer: TAP (Telocator Alphanumeric Protocol) is a transmission protocol used for transmission of text-only messages (e.g. to a SMSC).

Question: What's UCP.
Answer: UCP (Universal Computer Protocol) is a transmission protocol used for transmission of text-messages, picture-messages, logos or ringtones. Not all SMSCs do support this protocol.

Question: After a logo or SMS was sent no confirmation from SMSC is received, neither a posotive nor a negative one. Simply the timeout runs.
Answer: The SMSC probably doesn't support UCP protocol, but only TAP. SMSMan only uses UCP, even for text-only messages.

Question: Once a logo was sent the modem simply disconnects. What's wrong?
Answer: Once again, probably the SMSC doesn't support UCP.

Question: Using a foreign SMSC for sending logos I get conformation the logo was received, the logo however never arrives.
Answer: You may have missed to ad the country code in front of the recipients call number. Use +4017... instead of 017...!

Question: Does SMSMan support ISDN?
Answer: No. The current version only supports analogoue modems. ISDN support is planned for a succeeding version. Stay tuned.

Question: How much is it to send a logo using SMSMan?
Answer: It's the cost of an phone call to the destination number. If you call a national SMSC it cost a national call; if you call an SMSC in another country (e.g. Swisscom from Germany) it costs you an international call.

Question: What should I enter in the field Modem Wählstring?
Answer: If modem is connected directly to carrier's line enter ATDT. Enter ATDT0, if you first need to dial 0 to reach carrier's line.
